Bearing in mind it was the anniversary of the Battle of Ramillies in 1706, I had made stringent efforts to get the table set up, and thereby enable 'first game' with the new (actually not new any more) version of 'Field of Battle' (III), with Marlburian hacks.
Of course, I got nowhere near being ready ...but here are some pics anyway.
There's always next week / month to get this one moving...
Soon ...soon...
Next week, next month, it does not matter. We will be watching ... and waiting.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Thank you sir.
DeleteAs Jonathan said, it matters not. I am still preparing things for recognition of anniversaries of Verdun (I missed the 21st Feb 'jump off') and 1796 (first date was 10th April for Voltri). Activities continue and like Gandalf I'll be ready exactly when I intend to be!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your Ramillies, in due course.
Regards, James
Yes, thank you James. Now that it's half set up - it'll happen sooner :)
DeleteWe’ve all had that experience I think. 😀
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes - I was all excited too - never would've thought I would get distracted :))
DeleteAt least it’s set up and ready to go (assuming you can leave it in situ).
ReplyDeleteOh yes - good point; so long as there are no surprise parties or anything, Ramillies should remain intact upon the table...
Delete...wait, I need to check the party thing hmmm...
Well, it looks good so far. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks. Hoping to get things moving soon; the rules do look great.
DeleteLooks awesome, I hope you can get it played soon but there is something special about seeing a table set up and ready to go
ReplyDeleteThank you sir. Yes, hoping to get something moving this week - I've had the 3rd edition rules for a year. They aren't even 'new and shiny' any more.
DeleteI love a good teaser, Darren. Looking forward to the battle! I'll say one thing - FOB delivers excellent blog-fodder narratives perfectly suited to batreps!
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve.
DeleteFunny, I was just reading through the rules last night thinking: if a new wargamer were to play these and then compare them to more traditional/older rules, they would immediately see the benefits of the narrative vs multiple modifiers or 'buckets o' dice' approaches.
I think a lot of traditonal style wargames have left their mark on what followed afterward - even to the extent that 'Black Powder' is actually a very traditional style game. I think FoB has taken the good bits and added something unique to the whole affair.
Yes one gets the impression the action isnt all completely in your hands and that you're the commanding general. It really evokes that feeling. Can't say that for Black Powder I'll give you that sir!
DeleteI would recommend the 'FoB: WW2' set as well. So, it's teh same level as 'Rommel', in that stands represent companies, but the card dynamic works similarly.
DeleteThere is a new 'squad' level game coming from Brent - called 'Nothing Less than Victory'. It will have a card deck for each nationality, and I believe will steal some mechanisms from FoB.
