Based on a true story (there are some liberties (geddit) taken with a few characters in the show mind you) it is based on Alexander Rose's book; Washington's Spies.
Simcoe (not sure he was such a complete ba**tard as represented here), Rogers (again, not sure as previous...), Washington...even Benedict Arnold all feature in the first two seasons.
It's not big on battles so far (both Trenton and Saratoga take place off camera), and those that we do see plainly could have recruited more extras, though it's a fascinating story full of twists, turns and 'tricks of the trade'. Recommended; all the more pertinent because it's true(ish).
If anything, it echoed for me the sentiment that the late Professor Richard Holmes made in his AWI works (series and books), in that the frustration of British efforts in America, could draw parallels with the U.S. in the Vietnam conflict almost 200 years later.
I'll have to look that up on Prime...thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteIt's the little things that make the difference in this show I think. Benedict Arnold has a West country accent, and many are Ulster Scots (not badly done actually - as usually the Ulster accent is completely mangled by actors). All true to form, since there would not have been a strictly American accent - so it all makes sense.
