So I thought I'd try 'Blucher' in a larger scale...

I've always had a fondness for larger 54mm plastic figures.
So, when Blucher came along, I started (slowly) painting up units (well, 4 or 5 blokes taking a flag for a walk anyway) ...and basing them on 3"x3" x 1/2" mdf blocks.

Of course, these bases are also perfect for Volley and Bayonet. I'm also using a gloss varnish finish for that 'Toy Soldier' look.

This is where I am so far (not very far, but promising start).

The small figures beside the 'giants' are 15mm for scaling.

At this rate, I should be ready for a game by 2023...

  3. You do know you could have finished a whole 15 or 20mm army with same amount of paint 😉

  5. WOW Darren! This is amazing. This has always been a dream of mine to do after looking at the Volley and Bayonet rulebook. The figures look absolutely stunning, by the way.

  7. A perfectly viable option! Would be good for a demo game too.

    1. Yes. I think so many of us now see the base as a 'unit', and since the days of Volley and Bayonet, a lot of gamers have pretty much thrown scale out and seen the viability of the 'playing piece'. (Well, it's a good enough excuse for me).

  8. Nice (not so)minis, they must be a nice change of pace as far as painting goes. The pics of them with the smaller scale troops really shows off the sheer size of them....and now you have horse and musket era giants too!!.

    1. Change of pace alright. I can actually see what I'm painting LOL.
And only a few hours ago we were talking about 2mm. *sigh* wargaming, thou art a fickle mistress...

  9. These look fantastic and very inspiring. It's only a matter of time until I succumb to horse & musket in 54mm.

    1. Thanks John.
I know, and they're not really that expensive when you consider figures per base...and you get the visual appeal (albeit at the expanse of 'big' battalions not being there).
Besides, I have always loved those 54s.

  10. Beautifully painted and the units look great. A wonderful way to use those 'giants' (I share your fondness for the 54 mm plastic figs). I'll keep a keen eye on this project!

    1. Thanks James. I have been reviewing the collection, and I have managed to acquire a decent sized collection of Airfix, rare Timpo and Revell: certainly enough for 200-300 pint forces for French, Russian, Austrian and possibly British.
Certainly Blucher would seem to be the obvious choice for development...so here goes...

  11. All these references exist in 1/32 ? Oh I didn't know... maybe if I did, I would never have painted 1/72 :D

    1. Yes, it's a great scale Phil. Your 1/72 stuff is so good, that I think your 1/32 stuff would be superb sir!
