Seven Days to the River Rhine - prep

Steve over at 'Sound Officers Call' recently played Iron Cross. Now I've had these rules and done nothing with them, but Steve's post is fantastic, and the dynamics and visuals of the rules really hit home.

That said, I got the Cold War version: 'Seven Days to the River Rhine' and have been prepping the Skytrex 10mm (1:200) stuff that I've had sitting on a shelf for 20 years. I've also ordered some Timecast infantry.

So really, these pics are up to give impetus to the fact that I need to get a game in using the rules ...post haste.

Soviet armour considers the long road west...

British Challengers await their progress.

A few Warrior MICVs. It's the 80s, these are still 'shiny'.

Red Air ...could make all the difference.

...must finish the painting. I'm almost tempted to go with rough painted models just to get the game in...

...and some more 'Devil Makes Three', just cuz...

  1. Gaining motivation (or is it guilt?) from other bloggers is another benefit of the blogosphere. Good luck!

    1. Cheers Jack.
Soviet stuff is easy - just various greens. I know some guys insist on the correct RAL no. I'm not so fussed.

  4. Looking good, Darren! Can't wait to see some Cold War action! You will find that the Iron Cross rules lend themselves to good tactical decisions IMHO. You need elements to cover your advance and to react to the enemy's actions. When Ken fired at me with his units defending the Merderet crossing, I had to use support units to try and suppress him while my maneuver elements moved up. It was great fun and, at least to me, really evoked the feeling of a company commander.

    1. Thanks Steve - love the sound of that - really get that impression of bounding fire from reading the rules, and the use of command tokens gives that unique 'resource management' dynamic. Looking forward to trying the rules out.

    2. You hit the nail on the head perfectly. Boy did I feel stupid after my first turn when I lost all of my command tokens and Ken could run all over my force with impunity. A hard lesson to learn!

    1. Definitely worth a try from what I've read. The turn sequence makes a big difference to action/reaction - granted not as wide in scope as some more 'fuller' rules sets.
